My husband and I just moved to Missouri from Arkansas into a charming little fixer upper built in 1917. It screamed us from the very first moment we saw it (we are DIY nerds.) We knew that we would have to invest a lot of time and a lot of creativity into our home in order to make it as beautiful as we want it (on our small budget) but we enjoy doing it! I don’t have “after pics” yet. Not even close! But there are a bunch of “in-progress pics." for your viewing pleasure, so you can see all of our slow and steady changes as we go. .

The first room is the dining room. I am annoyed with myself because I was so anxious to jump right in it that I forgot to take official "before" pictures. I was able to get a couple of blurry pictures on my phone though that will give you somewhat of an idea of what this old-fashioned, wall-papered, mess looked like before.

This was one the only pictures I have of our dining room before the makeover. I know it is a poor excuse... I was really taking a picture of our cat, Frank, sleeping and not the room itself! As you can see though it was a big, giant, wallpaper disaster....

Since our house is so old, it was built old-fashioned. It goes in one giant circle (back then this helped with air-flow since the didn't have air conditioners.) Anyway, this picture (taken from my phone) shows where one of the useless doorways were. This particular one led into our room-we had 3 doorways in our bedroom alone and no doors to go on them, not to mention they are all different deminsions and not a normal door size. It would've cost a fortune to get custom doors so Matt put up drywall!

I am so proud of my handy-man! You wouldn't even know that there was a doorway there! Frank is a little bummed that he can no longer run endless circles late at night and disturb us.

I don't mean to offend anyone by insulting wallpaper, I like wallpaper, just not old, floral wallpaper. I knew I wanted the room to be a mixture of calm and comfort, but also represent our love of eclectic, rustic, and vintage things. So I chose the blue and Matt hesitantly agreed. As you will see in later pictures the blue coordinated with our living room (you can see one room while in the other, so I wanted it to flow.) The wood frames around the doors and baseboards is the original to the house. I was never that crazy over them like Matt was but I am really starting to like them with the new color on the walls!

It isn't as apparent in the pictures but the dining room is HUGE! It is the biggest space in the house. So because of that, our table is too teeny tiny for the room! Fortunately my sweet husband is building a table out of old doors for my birthday (Nov. 22) that will be a lot more size appropriate for such a big space. I can't wait to post about it!
We will probably be getting rid of the chair once we get the new table, or at least covering it with new fabric.

We are really proud with how are shadow boxes turned out- we used a couple of old vintage milk crates that I had been using for photography props, but I think our wall needed them more! Right now they have Halloween decorations on them!

Billy Buttons are one of my latest obsessions... These paticular ones are from our wedding.
We used one of our engagement pictures in this one and the cute little birds were our cake toppers at our wedding (which I will be doing a post over very soon!)

This chest will be very temporary in our dining room as well as the quick DIY art above it! Just wait till you see my finished idea for this wall!

Dried lavender... another one of my favorites.
My table setting so far. At our wedding we used mix-matched china and I saved my favorite pieces to use at home. The pumpkins are my attempt at fall decorating!

and lastly the centerpiece! I am in love with these vintage bottles- I found 2 at an estate sale for $10!! For now I am using a fake hydrangea and non-toxic plants in my house because our cat eats anything I put out!
Thats it for now! Keep checking back for more pictures as we continue to do more!
Don't let this cake fool you... it might look good but it was absolutely the nastiest thing I have ever baked. I am not playing! It was downright horrible! I got the recepie from Southern Living and was so excited to make a cake and the icing from scratch- I followed the recepie to a "T" (at least I think.) The moment had finally arrived and it was time to taste my baked-from-scratch cake and to my surprise it was chalky and bitter. The outside was burnt and the inside was moist... for now I am blaming it on my old dingy oven:(

Maybe I will try this recepie again someday!

Super Easy October Chili

Chili is just about our all time favorite meal around here and nothing is better than eating it on a cold night! So I whipped up a giant pot of my super easy chili  in about 20 minutes and enjoyed the rest of the night watching scary movies with my husband!

Ingredients:
  • One red onion
  • 2 lbs hamburger meat
  • 1 can stewed tomatoes
  • 3 cans chili beans
  • 2 packets of Williams chili seasoning
  1. Brown hamburger
  2. Drain meat and return to skillet
  3. Chop onion (I usually chop the onion before browning the meat so it is ready to go)
  4. Mix in onion and seasoning packets into skillet with meat
  5. Fill 1 Williams packet with water and pour into mixture
  6. Simmer 10 minute in skillet
  7. In the mean time pour remaining beans and stewed tomatoes in a big pot
  8. Once meat mixture has simmered mix in pot
  9. Add water if it is too thick
  10. Simmer chili until heated through and serve!
Thats it! It can't get much easier than that!

Joplin Extreme Home Makeover

Yesterday, my mom, husband, and I, were some of those crazy people who woke up at the crack of dawn to witness the reveal of the first house done by the TV show Extreme Home Makeover. The show built seven houses in seven days for seven families whose homes were destroyed by the F5 tornado that roared through Joplin on May 22 five months ago. It was so rewarding to experience such a historical event and to join a crowd of people who were just as inspired and encouraged as we were. So many peoples lives and homes were destroyed because of the tornado and it is nice to know that so many people from all over care!

Above, are a couple of pictures showing some of the remaining damage of the tornado... and to think this is 5 months after it hit.

This picture was taken on my iphone so it is a little fuzzy but I just loved the energy of it! This was right after they revealed the first house!

These were the best pictures I could get of Ty and the other designers since I was so short in such a big, tall crowd! Ty is basically looking at the camera in the last one!

Weekend Recap

In between giving our dining room a complete makover, I was able to snap a few pictures of our cat Frank while watching me from his ottoman. He likes to make sure I am doing everything right. I will post pictures up of our dining room transformation soon!

Such a sweet, boy.

I couldn't help but take pictures of these chocolate penut-butter cookies. Who doesn't like food pictures??
The best part of all is the mouth-watering blue that is now on our dining room walls!
